Elderly
Elderly
As we get older, our bodies begin to change and mature. Up to a certain point in life, our bodies unfortunately aren’t what they use to be whether that be an inability to walk and support ourselves independently to having difficulty bending and reaching our toes. Our bodies ability to recover also slows down, and aches and pains in the body may require special care.
In relation to our feet, the skin on our soles can be quite thin holistically, the change in balance and distribution of weight can cause corns, calluses and cracks in varying places of the feet such as the balls and heels; your nails can get quite tough and hard to manage yourself and the overall ability to reach down and continuously keep an eye on your feet can be limited.
Regular podiatry visits can be of huge benefit for our elderly population and their feet. Treatments can range from general cutting of nails and removal of thickened and troubling skin, to optimizing and improving balance through custom orthotic therapy and footwear education. Regular checks of adequate sensation and blood flow of the feet are also important.
